Selborne (Oates)

Captain Lawrence 'Titus' Oates was a soldier in the Inniskilling Dragoons who went on the 1912 Terra Nova Expedition to the South Pole.  He was employed to look after the ponies, but they were bought by someone else and were old and unsuitable.  Chosen as one of the five men to make the Pole attempt, Oates spent a lot of time outside the tent seeing to the ponies, and his feet were frostbitten, then his hands.  Trapped in the tent by a blizzard, Oates eventually walked out into the storm, telling the others, "I am going outside and may be some time."   He hoped that there would be enough extra food to enable Scott and the other two men to survive and make it to the store depot eleven miles away.  The displays at Selborne feature 20 minutes of the film '90 Degrees South' shot by Herbert Ponting FRGS, the expedition's photographer.
