Beacon Hill Fort

The first sign of old war installations was this mounting for a light machine gun on the land overlooking the beach.  The Radar Tower dates from 1941 and from there you can see the gun positions and director tower from the new fort in 1892.  There was another mounting for a searchlight or machine gun (nearest the radar tower) and for two six-inch guns.  The one nearest the director tower had the habit of breaking windows in the town when it fired, so a rear curtain was built in concrete.  Tunnels link the various positions.  The fort was decommissioned in 1958.

The Dovercourt Lighthouses

The High and Low Lighthouses, built in 1862, told sailors that when the lights were in line vertically, they were on the right channel into the estuary.  There were two similar lighthouses in Harwich and when these lights were in line, the ships turned to starboard and were in line to get into the dock there.

Dovercourt & Harwich

With Ann, Barry, Jon and a full complement of Sues, we headed to Dovercourt and its iconic Low Lighthouse.  In Harwich we met Wayne, who was very chilled and readily agreed to let me photograph him.  The Willow Submarine was made to remember the 150 German submarines moored here at the end of World War One.

Paxton Again

I went to the Pits to try out some settings on the Olympus, but the auto-tracking with five focus points was not suitable, so I went back to one point and no tracking.  The tern take-off did not use Pro-Capture, just anticipation.

Duxford

The girls were not at school because of a training day, and I had business at Duxford, so I took them with me.  They liked the educational suite best, trying loading to balance an aircraft, Morse Code and USAAC uniforms.  We nearly lost the badger!

Easter Monday

We took Ted to Therfield Heath and Meredith (and Ted) found themselves in Retriever heaven.  Sadie borrowed my camera and took several hundred photos.

Waresley Wood

To see the bluebells.  Ann lent Sadie a camera, and she looked like a pro.

Fowlmere Again

Better light for the harriers, but not the best.
