Beacon Hill Fort

The first sign of old war installations was this mounting for a light machine gun on the land overlooking the beach.  The Radar Tower dates from 1941 and from there you can see the gun positions and director tower from the new fort in 1892.  There was another mounting for a searchlight or machine gun (nearest the radar tower) and for two six-inch guns.  The one nearest the director tower had the habit of breaking windows in the town when it fired, so a rear curtain was built in concrete.  Tunnels link the various positions.  The fort was decommissioned in 1958.
