The gardens were good for our photographers, with flowers and insects. White's revolving chair up the hill from the house enabled him to sit and look in any direction, sheltered from the rain, wind or sun. The village is cute but one of the two pubs has closed, and so has the seven-day-a-week shop and Post Office. The church tower dates from 1781; White was four times vicar of Selborne, but only the last tenure was permanent.
