The original church on the site was burned down in 1720, and only the memorial to Sir Ralph Bovey was
saved. He died in 1679. This memorial is now in the chancel that was built in 1864 by Captain Sidney Stanley, who was followed by several army officers and JPs of the same name. It is not clear when the new church was built, but the coloured interior brickwork above the arches indicates the 19th Century. Inside, it is one of darkest churches in the area, partly due to the dark stained glass - the top photo here gives some idea how it actually looks to the eye.
