War Memorial

Wartime wrecks are often a better memorial to the dead than shiny triumphant machines.  This Halifax bomber now at the RAF Museum at Hendon was shot down on its first mission and spent forty years in a Norwegian lake.  Top pic shows the fin and rudder, with the roundel on the fuselage visible behind.  Next down shows one of the main flaps and the rear of the engine nacelle that had detached and damaged it.  Lower pics show the cockpit from the starboard side.  The throttle and mixture levers on the control pedestal are intact, and the elevator trim wheel can be seen beside the pilot's seat.
