Stokesay Castle, really a fortified manor house, has a feat of carpentry for its main hall roof and a yellow half-timbered house (seen from the tower). Powis Castle, near Welshpool, has terraced gardens and a décolleté woman with a couple of trumpets about to be thrown from a horse. Thanks to Peter and Jane for ferrying us around Shropshire.
