Originally a small villa in Twickenham called Chopp'd Straw Hall, it was enlarged and renamed by Horace Walpole, who bought it in 1748 and furnished it with things bought on his Grand Tour in a style known as Strawberry Hill Gothic, after Walpole's novels.
