Lancaster University

I took a walk up from Galgate to the university campus, where the first building you now see at the top of the hill is the InfoLab21 (top).  Many of the college residences have been demolished and rebuilt, but mine, County College, is still there.  Where County West used to be is now an open space, and Furness and Fylde Colleges have new residences (bottom).

Skipton

From the top: The Pork Pie Establishment; the canal, and yellow bikes all over the place where the Tour de France passed by.

Flying Across the Thames

The Emirates Air Line from the Isle of Dogs to Silvertown.  It rises to a height of 300 feet above the river.  The windows were tinted, which reduced the shutter speed, and we were more than half way over before I realised how slow these were.

Wren

This bird got into the conservatory, so we opened all the doors and went away.  When we came back later, it appeared from behind a cupboard and flew out of a door - straight into a window!  It was dazed, so Ann picked it up and cupped it against her, where it clung on.  After a couple of pix it flew off strongly.

Little Pickles

We looked after the girls for five days while Matt and Ellie went to Chicago to catch Da Bears at home.  Sadie is obsessed with letters and numbers now she is learning them at school.  Bug is just a pickle.

White Tigers

The top two pictures show Blizzard, the oldest white tiger at Hamerton, pacing in his cage.  The lower two show the new male lying on his elevated platform and not liking the attention.  Later he followed us to the other side of his enclosure and paced up and down aggressively.

Hamerton Wildlife

The Bearded Lizards from Australia are always in this position.  The Meerkats change lookouts frequently, chattering when the Kites swoop down to pick up scraps but otherwise playing happily.

Stags in the Morning

The photograph we were after was the second from top here.  Just enough morning light to pick out the horns against the mist, and as the animal moved forward, a line of about twenty photographers appeared in the mist behind it (to our right) all looking for the baying stag with its breath backlit by the sun.  We must have been popular!

Morning in the Park

We returned to the park before sunrise and headed for the area where we'd seen stags the previous day.  It was misty and wet (and cold!).

Strawberry Hill

Originally a small villa in Twickenham called Chopp'd Straw Hall, it was enlarged and renamed by Horace Walpole, who bought it in 1748 and furnished it with things bought on his Grand Tour in a style known as Strawberry Hill Gothic, after Walpole's novels.  From the top:  the exterior; the Library; the staircase; the Gallery.
