Gary Gets One Past The Tonsils

Gary Grebe caught himself a small pike and had quite a battle getting it head-first in his beak before slinging his head back and dropping it down the hatch, a manoeuvre that took less than a second.  My focus jumped to the background while I concentrated on the moment.  The 13th was unlucky for this fish.

Back to the Future

We returned to Wicken, but the Hobbies had gone, all but one.  There were few birds about, and this Whitethroat was the best we got.

Trawling

Some images from the card in the 5D; a brand-new dragonfly from a larva in our pond, Sadie's disco ball at 1/5th of a second and some Intentional Camera Movement from a Wednesday Workshop.

Paxton Pits

Ann went to the Pits at 7 a.m. to do a bird count and I showed up at a much more convenient hour!  Saw two cuckoos and a hobby but photographed only more common species, beginning with the dunnock.  The nightingale skulked and I did not get a clear picture.

Still No Life

Dull but dry Saturday sitting processing (and throwing out hundreds of) photographs of Hobbies.  Went for a walk with Meredith, who picked flowers, which were eaten by a horse she petted with her free hand.  She saw the funny side and we picked more flowers on the way home.  

Get A Life!

Back at Wicken Fen, and there were even more Hobbies around, right down to ground level, like an avian air show.  Mayflies were their main food, as there aren't any dragonflies out yet.

Grey Wagtails

Seen near Trumpington Meadows during a walk.  I returned with my camera and set up while they hopped onto a twig near their nest, took a quick burst of photos and left them in peace.
